Colchester MP Bob Russell has condemned the actions of rioters who defaced the Cenotaph and a statue of Winston Churchill.

Mr Russell is one of three parliamentary advisers to the Royal British Legion.

And he said the vandalism, caused by anti-capitalist demonstrators in London on Monday, was an insult to those whose gave their lives in war.

He said: "What happened yesterday was an attack on the many people who gave their lives to this country and those who gave their lives to fight fascism so democracy could prevail.

"Those who defaced the Cenotaph and the Churchill memorial were spitting on the memory of those who fought fascism.

"There is nothing to choose between fascists and anarchists. Both groups are opposed to democracy."

Leaders of branches of the Royal British Legion in north Essex also condemned the vandalism.
