Wickford's millennium celebrations at the end of May have been given a boost by Basildon District Council's promise that it will do all it can to help clean up the town for the big day.

Some residents and traders had raised worries over the state of the town centre as Wickford's day of millennial festivities approached on Bank Holiday Monday May 29.

The council has, however, now been working with members of the town's millennium committee to see how it can help their preparations and try to make sure litter and graffiti do not spoil the massive party.

The committee's Gloria Bruce said: "I am absolutely over the moon if the council helps us tidy up the High Street, especially where the dedication for the new town sign and the millennium flask will be taking place.

"It is very nice to see Basildon Council being so positive as there is often a feeling in Wickford that it does a lot for people in Basildon, but forgets about people here."

Wickford is set to celebrate the year 2000 in style with a bright festival of colour and music stretching over two town centre sites - the High Street and Nevendon Recreation Ground.

Among the attractions will be a parade including many musical groups from the area, a horticultural show, a children's tea party and a full jazz band. There will be a lot more to see and do as events run from 11am to 9pm including a grand finale featuring local bands.

Mrs Bruce said: "We just want to have something the whole town can enjoy and remember."

A council spokeswoman said: "We are glad to be able to help the millennium committee's preparations in whatever way we can.

"Our street cleaning department is in the town centre every day - emptying bins and inspecting the area. There should not be an excessive litter problem in the town centre, but we will see what else the committee would like us to do.

"As far as graffiti is concerned we can only clean it away from council property. If graffiti is on private property unfortunately we are unable to do anything as it is the responsibility of the owner to carry out the work."

County councillor Iris Pummell, who called on the council to help the town's celebrations last week, said: "Basildon Council has celebrated its 50th anniversary. Now it should help Wickford have a really great party for the millennium by making sure it can take place in a clean and pleasant environment.

"I am pleased the council is being constructive and helpful for a change and hope it will live up to its word."
