Thousands of pounds worth of road safety improvements in the Braintree district look set to get the go-ahead.

A mixture of speed reduction schemes, new footways and cycling projects have been earmarked for the next year and councillors are being urged to give the green light to the £200,000 programme, which will be funded by Essex County Council.

Speed reduction schemes are set for Panfield Lane and Coldnailhurst Avenue, Braintree, Spinks Lane and Church Street, Witham, and Grange Hill and Kelvedon Road, Coggeshall.

There are also plans for pram and wheelchair crossings and a zebra crossing in Braintree Road, Witham.

A new mini-roundabout for Mill Lane and a one-way system in Guithavon Street, both in Witham, have been carried over from last year's programme.

But there are more than 50 outstanding projects which cannot be included because there is not enough cash.

Essex County Council highways engineer Bob Button said: "We have tried to target the main areas but we need feedback from parish councils to be sure.

"Once the programme has been approved, we will be working closely with residents to make sure we make the right improvements."

District councillors will make a final decision at the environment committee today.
