Former Colchester United boss Steve Wignall was at the centre of a row following his controversial move to Doncaster Rovers from fellow Nationwide Conference club Stevenage Borough.

Wignall, who started his Football League career with Doncaster as a centre-half, was officially named as Rovers' new manager on Wednesday afternoon - less than a month after being named as Stevenage boss.

Wignall's shock departure from the Hertfordshire club, who handed him his first managerial job since his exit from Layer Road 15 months ago, has left Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace fuming.

Wallace is reported to be extremely angered by the fact Wignall failed to submit a formal resignation after agreeing a two-year deal.

He is also upset that no formal approach has been received from Doncaster for Wignall.

Wignall spent five seasons as a player with Rovers before his £5,000 transfer to the U's in 1977.
