Much rumour is circulating about Chelmsford Chieftains set up for next season, including players, coach and as to which league they will be playing in.

Chieftains spokesman, John Blundell, said: ''At this moment in time it is all rumour. Like nearly everyone in EPL, the directors are having a break from ice hockey.

''That does not mean that we are not involved in decisions that need to be taken, far from it. We have been busy sorting out our financial situation and sponsorship for next season and can say that the situation remains in a healthy position.

''This position is essential for us to build our budget which we are currently doing.

Mr Blundell added: ''We were happy with our squad from last season and would like to retain as many players as we can and would like to think that they would like to return to Chelmsford.

''Many have already intimated their intention to stay. But like us, players too like a break from hockey, most have full time jobs and will not commit themselves to any team at such an early stage.

The problem with the league seems to be the one causing the most speculation.

Mr Blundell said: ''We have seen written, and have had many calls suggesting that we are already committed to British National League. This is totally unfounded.

''The directors have met twice to discuss this situation and remain firmly committed to the English Premier League.

''We are aware that a deadline was set for teams to apply to join EPL and that the deadline has now passed.

''The directors also know that EIHA Secretary Bill Brotton is busy talking to new teams who are interested and that there is an air of optimism that EPL will be viable next season.

''We are prepared to wait until all avenues for EPL are exausted.

''In the event that EPL does not run, we will be meeting with the remaining teams and the EIHA to discuss the options and only then will we make a decision as to where to play.

''As we have stated previously, we will do what we think is right for the club and the fans. There are many issues to consider and we will consider them carefully.

''I know it's a frustrating time for fans but rest assured once decisions have been made, then the fans will be put fully in the picture''.
