Billericay now has one more zebra on its streets after months of tireless work by parents, teachers and pupils.

All at Buttsbury Infants School, in Perry Street, were today (Tuesday) celebrating the completion of a zebra crossing outside the school.

When cash-hit Basildon Council said it did not have the money to pay for a crossing - parents set about raising the cash themselves.

Their hard work has now paid off. Car boot sales, fundays, sponsored walks and donations have raised £6,800 towards the £11,700 needed.

Graham Martin of the school's Parent Teacher Association said: "I'm happy to see it up and running, it is a great relief and wonderful it has happened so soon."

He added it was good to see the children making use of the crossing and to know their journey to school is now that bit safer.

Crossing safely - pals Matthew Longdon, Rachel Geddes, Rebecca Russell and Alex Tapley make their way to school
