Running: Southend run's strong showing

The course started at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre in Eastern Avenue, and victory went to Londoner Ty Berg.

He won in a time of one hour. 13m. 42s. - just four seconds outside the course record - with Keith Purvis first Southend competitor home in one hour. 15m. 56s.

The half-marathon, mainly sponsored by Keymed along with backing from the Evening Echo, Mark One Hire, Southend United, Progressive Printing and many other local organisations, took competitors on a sun-drenched course through North Shoebury and Wakering, Barling, Shopland and Sutton then back to Garon's Park.

Berg received the Evening Echo Shield - a similar prize being awarded to the first lady competitor home, Shona Hicks, who recorded a course record time of one hour. 21m. 22s.

Both she and men's winner Berg are members of the Mornington Chasers Club.

An accompanying fun run, held over a course of around 3,000 metres, saw competitors in various forms tackle the distance. Breeze Am's Peter Holmes took his dog Rosie with him, while David English had the added handicap of pushing toddler Jack Edden over the course in his pushchair.

Winner of the fun run was 12-year-old Neil Birnie, a member of the Vestall Vergins, while Marie Gamage was first girl to complete the distance.

It's expected that Fair Havens and Little Havens Hospices, will collect around £10,000 in total from the proceeds on the day.
