Every woman wants to say "yes" to a knight in shining armour.

But Dawn Goodall was left speechless when boyfriend Jason George went down on one knee and proposed dressed as her medieval hero.

Surrounded by bemused shoppers in Chelmsford High Street, Jason, 30, held a banner asking for Dawn's hand and produced a ring which he popped on her trembling finger.

Family and friends sobbed and shoppers applauded as Dawn, of Heath Drive, Chelmsford, replied: "Yes."

Jason, a retained Burnham firefighter, who works as a lorry driver at Knight Group in Kelvedon, had kept the proposal scecret from Dawn for weeks.

He got the suit of armour from Brighton and even got Dawn's mum to cancel a hospital appointment for her because he was so determined to surprise his sweetheart.

He said: "I just thought I could be her knight in shining armour. I didn't want to be like all the other blokes, I wanted to do something she would never forget."

Stunned Dawn, 28, who works at a Brentwood children's home said: "I think he's lovely. I just can't believe it - I didn't have a clue, it was great."

Jason who lives in Alexandra Road, Burnham, said: "I'm going to whisk her away and there are more surprises in store."
