EVERSLEY PARK 246-7

ESSEX CARRIERS 165-9

(Eversley Park won by 81 runs)

Essex Carriers crashed to their first Reefer 90 league defeat of the season at Eversley Park.

The Basildon outfit were too tasty for their Hadleigh opponents who had Spicer to thank for their win, hitting a grand total of 102 runs.

Townsend smashed another 43 against the shell-shocked Carriers, whose best bowling efforts came from Mark Baker (2-37) and Lee Allen (2-48).

However, Carriers' Steve Rogers managed to leave the field with his pride intact, following a well batted half-century, with Mike Blerkom providing another 27 runs in support.

But the Eversley bowlers made it a miserable day for Carriers, with Westwell taking 2-26, Woods claiming 2-48 and Duffy dispatching 2-2 in one over.

Good Grief masterminds Benfleet seconds' defeat

BENFLEET II 162-8 dec

HUTTON 163-7

(Hutton won by three wickets)

Benfleet seconds came to grief at Hutton... after a batsman called Grief hit 40 runs to steer the home side to victory.

Benfleet had declared on 168 following an excellent 67 from Jon Hunter, who was back in the side after injury, and a knock of 30 from Troy White.

Grief and Hammond (43 not out) then took up their bats to power Hutton to the win, although there was good bowling from Trent Glover (3-54) and Alan Hitchcock (2-27).

BENFLEET III 148 all out

SAFFRON WALDEN 150-3

(Saffron Walden won by seven wickets)

Benfleet collapsed from 105-2 to 148 after Alexis Gregory (48) and Deryck Povey (41) had earlier set a solid platform for the innings.

Price (4-34) and Cornell (5-17) had done the damage, while Ford (54 not out) and Lodge (34) delivered victory for Saffron Walden on the batting front.

EASTWOOD 149

BENFLEET SUNDAY XI 121

(Eastwood won by 28 runs)

Troy Burns (4-6) and Steven Scott (2-49) skittled out Eastwood for 149 after they had earlier moved to 98-1 thanks to I Khan (43) and Harper (43).

But Benfleet could not quite overtake the tally, despite Andy Scott's 29 and a 41 from Burns.

SOUTHEND under-13s 61

BENFLEET under-13s 62-3

(Benfleet won by 7 wickets)

Barry Catmull's 23 and 10-year-old James Walkinshaw's 11 took Benfleet past Southend's total after Parry Jackson (3-11) and Gareth Steed (3-11) had helped to get their rivals out for 61.

Duke lords it up with sixth half-century

BROOMHILL 187-7

UPMINSTER 172

(Broomhill won by 15 runs)

Simon Duke recorded his sixth half-century in seven innings as Broomhill saw off Upminster by 20 runs in this Essex Sunday League match.

Opening batsman Duke top-scored with 58 with Jeremy Lawford adding 44 as Broomhill reached 187-7 from their 45 overs.

P Laird was the main tormentor for Upminster with 1-9 from a nine-over spell which included six maidens.

Upminster were forced to rely on a team effort of small knocks as they attempted to reach their target.

But they were bowled out for 167 after 43 overs thanks largely to the efforts of Johnny Flanders (3-16 off three overs) and Lawford (4-41 off nine overs).

CHISLEHURST & WEST KENT 194

BROOMHILL 130-6

(Match drawn)

Broomhill were 64 runs short of their target when they ran out of time thus forcing a draw.

Rupert Duke was the star of the Broomhill attack with figures of 7-42.

But Southend wicketkeeper Dave Wilkins took his share of glory with seven catches behind as the Kentish side were bowled out for 194.

Simon Duke put in an unbeaten 72 during the Broomhill innings.

Powell powers to grand club finale

Billericay II 220-8

Gidea Park II 223-4

(Gidea Park won by six wickets)

Billericay's Stuart Powell signed off in style in his last appearance for the club before emigrating to Spain with his family.

He combined with Stuart Hynes for a 160-run second wicket partnership which formed the backbone of the innings.

Powell has played for Billericay since he was young and captained the first team to the Essex League Second Division title.

"In the past season and a half he has been prolific with the bat, scoring centuries that gave him a league average of over 70 in the second XI last season - a figure he matched again before his departure," said Billericay spokesman Gary Marshall.

"Needless to say, he will be sorely missed."

The wickets tumbled once Powell and Hynes were parted with Winmill and Allen doing the bulk of the damage.

The Gidea Park reply was based around a major individual innings, with opener Baker making 86.

He and Allen added 71 for the second wicket and with Jones he all but sealed the match as they added a further 89 for the third.

Billericay III 130

Gidea Park III 134-2

(Gidea Park won by eight wickets)

Billericay lost wickets at regular intervals and this undermined their efforts and expectations of a big score against Gidea Park & Romford.

The only batsmen who made much of an impression were: Jon Batson (25), Nick Jowett (22) and Ian Smith (26). For the visitors Gorden (4-48) did the most damage.

Billericay's bowlers faired no batter as Bowler (36), Redwood (31 not out) and Patient (33 not out) made short work of the total.

Billericay IV 228-4

Gidea Park IV 232-1

(Gidea Park won by nine wickets)

It was a bad day for the bowlers as the two sides achieved 460 runs for the loss of five wickets.

The Billericay total began to look vulnerable as after the early loss of a wicket Montgomery (103 not out) and Goldstone (100 not out) managed to score runs at will to ease Gidea Park and Romford to victory.

Billericay had seen a mammoth partnership of their own as openers Alex Saitch (121) and Jon Gould (70) put on 176 runs before being parted.

It was Saitch's maiden senior century and much deserved, however, his partner took too long to make his runs, which put pressure on Saitch and the rest of the batting order in an effort to build a competitive total, which they failed to do.

Billericay V 114-8

Chelmsford V 111

(Billericay won by three runs)

The fifths pulled off the most exciting win of the weekend by three runs.

The final two overs started with Chelmsford needing just seven runs with four wickets remaining.

Graham Bangs took a wicket in his last over to finish with the fantastic figures of 4-41 from 16 overs.

The final over began with a direct hit run out by skipper Hayward and then Andrew Scurfield took the last two wickets to wrap up a very good win.

Earlier, James Taylor had bowled two excellent spells finishing with 3-15 from 10 overs.

Miller and Drain took the score from 12-3 to 61-4 for Chelmsford and threatened to set up an easy win, but the steady bowling of Bangs kept them in check.

At the beginning of the match Billericay won the toss and batted.

Two sound partnership by Roger Hatward and Frances Mower then James Taylor had taken the score to 67.

But then the steady loss of wickets meant a loss of momentum and a very modest total, which in the end proved to be just enough.

Bowlers ruin Southend day

SHENFIELD 179-9 declared

SOUTHEND II 66

(Shenfield won by 117 runs)

A poor day for Southend saw them fall away under tight bowling to be dismissed for 66.

G Williams took 5-22 off 15 overs for Shenfield as Southend were decimated off 40 overs.

Only Chris Chalmers (21) and Nigel Green (17 not out) put up any real fight.

Shenfield had earlier been in trouble at 64-5 against the bowling of Colin Marshall (2-24) and Rupert Duke (2-32).

But their batsmen pulled things around allowing the team to declare on 179-9 off 52 overs. Only Green (3-44) could make any impression on the Shenfield tail.

SOUTHEND III 116

SHENFIELD 117-5

(Shenfield won by five wickets)

Southend's thirds did not fare much better against Shenfield and were bowled out for 116 off 52.4 overs. This was only achieved because opening batsman Pete Stannard held onto make 65 and be the last player out.

Shenfield found it hard going but managed to overcome Southend's total for the loss of five wickets off 44 overs.

Steve Johnson bowled well for the seasiders to take 2-20 off 14 overs.

BASILDON 202-7

SOUTHEND IV 192-7

(Match drawn)

High-flying Southend just could not pull off their eighth win of the season.

The seasiders were kept in the field until 5.10pm as Basildon scored 202-7 from their 52 overs.

R Henderson led the way for Basildon with 82 not out, while Dean Johnson bowled very well again for his 2-66 off 22 overs, backed up by Rob Norman 2-48 off 14 overs.

Southend were left with only 36 overs but managed to make 192-7 at the close.

Ian Witteron led the charge with 45, followed by Paul Cunningham (30) and Del Monte (25 not out).

ORSETT 217 for 8 off 45 overs

SOUTHEND 221 for 5 off 44 overs

(Southend won by five wickets)

The Sunday team's win brightened up the poor weekend that Southend suffered.

Orsett were put into bat and scored 217-8 off their 45 overs, with D Cass making 82.

All the Southend bowlers shared the honours and they were pleased to contain Orsett to one of the lowest scores that they had achieved this season in this limited overs competition.

Southend got off to a flying start with Newman Khan and Craig Porter scoring 98 for the first wicket off 18 overs.

Brad Everitt followed with 40 runs before things slowed up and Southend only managed to creep home in the 44th over after losing five wickets.

Leg before ends match

BRITANNIA LODGE 125

OLD WESTCLIFFIANS 90

(Britannia won by 35 runs)

Both sides battled to score runs on a slow pitch at Aviation Way.

But it was a surprise last ball lbw decision which gave Lodge victory and left the Old Boys disappointed.

A Renny (44) was the Lodge top-scorer and D Bullon with 6-48 led the Old Westcliffian attack.

OLD WESTCLIFFIANS II 130

BRITANNIA LODGE II 60

(Old Westcliffians won by 70 runs)

A batting innings from Ian Barton ensured the Old Boys set a difficult target for Britannia Lodge.

Barton (49) and Johnson (22) proved the mainstay of the innings, while fine bowling from M Daine (4-15) and R Gibson (3-19) pegged back the Lodge innings.

Pond makes splash in draw

PEGASUS 158

EASTWOOD 151-9

Eastwood collapsed from 90-3 and had to settle for a draw.

Phil Pond held the innings together with 52 as Eastwood reached 151-9.

Earlier Corringham-based Pegasus were bowled out for 158, with Aria Patel achieving 5-40 for Eastwood.

PEGASUS 84

EASTWOOD II 85-3

(Eastwood won by seven wickets)

Eastwood found themselves at 14-3 while chasing a modest target.

But they recovered as Phil Bartlett and Ian Roake - 39 not out and 28 not out respectively - saw the team pass their target without further loss.

Pegasus had earlier been dismissed for 84 with Tony Leake claiming 4-4.

EASTWOOD III 170-8

UPMINSTER 93-7

(Match drawn)

Eastwood had the better of this drawn game with the unbeaten league leaders.

Graham Fletcher (37) and John Mitchell (29) led the Eastwood innings, while Wayne Maunders (3-27) provided the biggest threat to Upminster.

EASTWOOD IV 135

RAYLEIGH 89-9

(Match drawn)

An amazing career best from Stephens just failed to bring victory as the last Rayleigh pair hung on for the draw.

Stephens notched up an unbeaten 91 as Eastwood were dismissed for 135. Palmer then took 3-14 as Rayleigh kept their final wicket intact.

EASTWOOD 149

BENFLEET 121

(Eastwood won by 28 runs)

Imran Khan and James Harper shared the spoils with 43 runs each as Benfleet were unable to reach their target.

The Eastwood innings collapsed after an opening partnership of 91, but good bowling made their total too much for Benfleet.

John Mitchell senior took 4-27 as Benfleet capitulated in this Sunday match.
