New arrangements for enforcing parking restrictions in Essex are under consideration.

The transfer of powers from police to Essex County Council is the subject of a consultation document.

Under the new proposals, parking attendants would be employed by the Highway Authority to issue penalty tickets and authorise the fixing of clamps or towing away.

If implemented, it is the council's intention to transfer the responsibility to any district wishing to undertake it.

The report recommends countywide decriminalisation of parking enforcement over no more than three years, with the county council funding some of the costs

Copies of the consultation document may be obtained by ringing 01245 437065 or by email on highways.helpline@essexcc.gov.uk
