The Environment Agency has backed "robust plans" developed by Anglia region water companies to help manage supplies in drought.

The region experienced severe drought in the 1990s. The period between April 1995 and October 1997 was the driest of the century without 75 per cent of average rainfall.

Region water resources manager, Graham Wilson, said: "We're pleased to announce all water companies have produced sensible, workable plans - flexible enough to deal with drought of differing intensity.

"They also take into consideration potential impacts on the environment, and complement the long-term water resource plans companies have developed. Together, they will help to ensure water companies can manage water supplies in the best possible way through any set of weather conditions.

"Water companies aim to provide an adequate supply of wholesome water at all times. All of them have made a commitment work.''
