The highlight of the weekend for the Shaftesbury Cycling Club was the 20 miles time trial, held north of Bishop's Stortford and all 20 members who entered faced the timekeeper for the start.

The weather was mild but windy and so rapid times were not expected, but the competition between riders was nevertheless keen.

Ieuan Reed showed a clean pair of wheels to everyone and recorded a splendid 1.13.21 with Grant Lampiere second in 1.15.57.

The fastest veteran rider was Joe O'Herlihy in 1.23.54 and the fastest lady was Elaine Barrow in 1.30.35. The fastest junior rider was Matt Wells in 1.30.41.

Two other juniors who rode were Christine Larsen and Simon Wells riding their first 30 miles event which is the first time in club history, three juniors have competed and finished this distance.

The handicap section was also keenly contested.

Ron Namen took first handicap, with Wayne Greve second (the first award he has achieved since joining the club three years ago), while Simon Wells was third, Grant Lampiere fourth and Martin Wheeler (coming out of semi-retirement) gaining fifth place.

The roadworks on the A12 should come to an end during this week and one of the fastest courses in the country could well be back in use next Sunday for the Southend and County Wheelers 50 miles time trial, which should produce some electrifying times if the weather starts to improve.
