Plans are being discussed for new retail units at the former Bolingbroke and Wenley site in Chelmsford's High Street.

Chelmsford Council's environment committee will look at the proposals by Chartwell Land Development Ltd for the two or three storey development of seven shops at a meeting on Tuesday.

The plans also include a servicing area, alterations to footways and replacement bus facilities at the rear of the old store on New London Road.

The development will incorporate the demolition of the existing store and the creation of two large and five smaller retail units.

The site is expected to be covered with hoardings for about 18 months.

Three bus shelters are also proposed by the developers to replace the former overhanging shop frontage in New London Road which served as an unofficial waiting area for passengers using the stops.

The developers have also agreed to commission public art which would be incorporated into the design of the bus shelters.

A decision regarding the plans is expected to be made at the environment committee meeting on Tuesday.
