A campaign is being launched in Braintree against petrol prices.

The Braintree branch of the Conservative Association is to launch a Stop the Sting campaign in George Yard, on Saturday, July 29.

Those involved in the campaign will also travel to other areas including Witham, Black Notley and Silver End where displays will be set up and residents asked to sign petitions, which will also be distributed to community centres and pubs.

The petition will be passed on to the Government later this year.

Brooks Newmark, prospective Conservative parliamentary candidate for Braintree, said: "These petrol prices are highway robbery. In the last week I have received nearly 150 letters highlighting the disgust of residents in the area.

"Seventy two pence of every pound goes on petrol tax and it is time we said enough is enough.

"Cars are no longer a luxury, they are a necessity and this is especially true to those in the Braintree district, many of who live in rural areas."

Mr Newmark hopes the campaign will provide a sounding board for those in the community and wants to get 25,000 signatures by the end of the summer.
