Hopes were high this week that plans for Braintree's long-awaited community hospital would take a major step forward.
Representatives from Braintree's primary care group and from Mid Essex Hospitals Trust were due to present the strategic case for the scheme yesterday (Thursday) at a meeting with health officials from the Eastern region's capital allocation group.
Dr Brian Spencer, co-chairman of the primary care group, said a bid would be made for around £5 million for the project to be developed on the WJC Hospital site.
He said: "If the bid is successful, the plan will go to consultation." He said the proposal was central to the primary care group's vision for health care for the Braintree area.
It is expected that if the project goes ahead the St Michael's Hospital site will be released for housing.
