An off-duty police officer fought off an assailant who jumped on her while she was enjoying an evening cycle ride.

A spokesman for Clacton police said the man, who was aged about 25, leapt out and grabbed the officer around the shoulder as she was cycling along Marine Parade East, Clacton.

The spokesman added: "She kicked out and got away by cycling off home. We are obviously anxious to catch this man."

He said it was believed the assault could have happened to any member of the public and it was not thought that a police officer had been specifically targeted.

The attacker is described as white, of medium build, with a beard and thick hair. He was wearing a black, bomber-type jacket, dark trousers and a dark T-shirt with a pattern on it.

The incident occurred at about 9.40pm last night (Thursday) opposite Westminster Court.

Anyone who saw a man fitting the description around that time, or who saw the incident is asked to contact Clacton police on 01255 221312
