Chelmsford Athletic Club men competed in a Southern Mens League Division Two fixture at Brighton and finished a creditable second, a position that gives them an outside chance of promotion.

This was a remarkable achievement as due to injuries and other commitments they only travelled to Brighton with 11 athletes.

Whilst all team members contributed to the points tally, special mention must be made to the middle distance group of Gavin Chatterton, John Burrell, Mark Sandford and Martin Gibbs who doubled in their events.

Supporting performances were given by Martin Ohrland and Matthew Hartigan in the jumps, Mike Williams and Phil Griggs in the throws and by team captain Mark Weir and Martin Branfoot who competed in any events that were not covered.

The youngsters from the club also had some stirling results in an Eastern Young Athletes meeting at Watford.

The club are doing well in all age groups and are likely to gain promotion at the end of the season.

One outstanding display was by Benjamin Ferriby for the under 13 boys, as he won the shot, 100m and 200m.

The 100m was won in a time of 12.7 seconds, equalling the club record, while the 200m was won in 25.8 seconds, which shattered the existing club record which had stood since 1985.

Other under 13 boys winners were Mark Soame, high jump, 400m and hurdles, Siay Akande, 100m and 400m, Daniel Hawkes, 100m and 200m, Chris Siswick, 800m, 1500m and hurdles, Mark Woodley, 800m, 1500m and high jump, Michael Alleyway, shot putt and discus, and Kim Chitton, discus.

In the under 15 boys there were good performances by Reiss Thomson, who won the high jump and long jump, Aiden Collins the long jump, high jump and 400m, Andrew Denney, 400m and shot, Daniel Hutley, 1500m, Matthew Williams, shot putt and discus, Will Wright, 800m, and John Ferguson, 1500m.
