Andrew McGarry could be handed his National League debut when Essex take on Derbyshire at Chelmsford on Sunday.
The 18-year-old fast bowler is poised to play after Mark Ilott limped off with a pulled hamstring in the current Championship match with Worcestershire.
With Ricky Anderson still recovering from a broken toe, McGarry seems the obvious replacement, particularly after impressing in his first Championship appearance this week.
The clash against Derbyshire could also herald the return of Graham Napier. Another vacancy exists because Darren Robinson is ruled out with a broken thumb.
Essex have yet to finalise their squad but those on duty will be attempting to take the County to a third successive victory in the competition following triumphs over Warwickshire and Middlesex.
