A woman is getting on her bike to raise money for Mencap, the charity which helps handicapped children.

Janet Head, 46, of Queensway, Lawford, is among 110 riders nationwide planning to cycle 500k -- about 310 miles -- beside the River Nile in February.

Mrs Head is a secretary at Mistley Norman Primary School and heard about the event when details were sent to the school.

The mother of three grown-up children, Mrs Head, still a playing member of East Bergholt Ladies Hockey Club, said: "I've always wanted to go to Egypt and be really fit, so I'll achieve both," said Mrs Head.

She added: "It's a challenge and I'm really looking forward to it."

Mrs Head has to raise at least £1,950 in sponsorship and has already held a table top sale. She is also organising a fashion show, more sales and will be selling Christmas cards and gifts and the hockey club is to arrange a fundraising event.

But she needs more sponsors and anyone willing to help is asked to contact her on 01206 393733.
