A slice of Maldon history is being opened up to the public.

Maldon Archaeological and Historical Group's premises have been refurbished and re-opened after thousands of pounds were spent on a face lift.

The group, based at Brickhouse Farm in Heybridge, has always been private, but members decided to open a resource centre so members of the public can share their findings.

Leader of Maldon District Council Roy Pipe cut the ribbon to the new-look building and more than 30 members joined the celebrations.

Group chairman Derek Punchard said: "We have a lot of books, information and records and expertise among our members so it seemed sensible to extend it. But we needed to improve our facilities before we could open it to the public."

A grant from the Millennium Festival Awards for All scheme allowed the group to buy display cases, library book casing and racking.

More cash from Maldon District Council allowed new kitchen units to be bought and the group has also provided money to redecorate.

The group meets at the centre every Wednesday from 7.30pm and everyone is welcome.
