Pedal power is all set to make a return to Witham with a proposed network of cycle paths criss-crossing the town.

Witham Cyclists' Association has been reviewing the town cycle provision in partnership with Essex County Council, and has collated a report outlining what needs to be done to improve bicycle usage.

The association has identified three central routes it hopes will form the backbone of a cycle network criss-crossing the town.

Routes would be created from the new Maltings Lane housing development to the town centre and a cycle path along the route of the disused Maldon to Witham railway line would be created, drawing in cyclists from surrounding villages to the industrial estates to the north of Witham.

Silver End would be directly linked to Witham via a cyclepath which would be created along existing footpaths, providing commuters in the village with a viable transport alternative.

Peter Fox, spokesman for WCA, said: "Overall we're looking to improve cycleways throughout the town and create a real network."

Tom Hewitt , Labour leader of Witham Town Council, said: "These proposals to extend the cycle network are really something to be welcomed."

The report on cycleways in Witham will be published in the autumn.

WCA's next meeting is on August 7 at the White Horse pub, Chipping Hill, Witham, at 8.15pm.
