Chelmsford town centre shoppers looted goods from a Third World shop which had just been closed by bailiffs.
They stole a 4ft carved giraffe, candles, wind chimes, incense, bedding and other property from Zanzibar, by the Stone Bridge, Moulsham Street.
Owner Shyy Mukeshi said: "I feel sad for people who are stealing from the Third World. They must be sick."
Pc Dave Bird said that the thefts of the African goods started around 12.30pm on Thursday.
People were walking off with various items, and police have been examining CCTV film to identify the looters.
The store owner had gone for a quick cup off coffee near by while the property, in bags, was being ferried away to storage while she looks for a new premises.
Three teenagers, two of them young girls, have been questioned by police. One girl was reprimanded, another released while inquiries continue, and an 18-year-old cautioned.
Pc Bird is continuing investigations and wants anyone who might have seen thefts to contact him on 01245 491212.
Court judges decided that the shop owner must leave the premises to landlord Odeon Cinemas.
The premises are now boarded and the locks have been hanged.
Anyone who can help find premises for Ms Mukeshi is asked to telephone 01245 360880. She is offering a weekend trip for two as a reward to anyone who successfully helps her.
