Police investigating the rape of a teenager in a Witham cornfield have appealed for a jogger to come forward.

Detectives believe a man, who is often seen running in the Conrad Road area where the incident happened, could have vital information. They are stressing he is not a suspect.

The jogger, who wears dark tracksuit trousers, regularly runs in the area in the evenings, according to a member of the public who called the police following appeals for information.

The 17-year-old woman victim was attacked on Monday at 5.30pm.

An Essex Police spokesman today (Friday) said: "Several people we have spoken to say the area is popular with joggers and we are appealing for any joggers to come forward who might have been in the area.

"One witness has said they often see a male jogger in dark running trousers in the evening and we would really like to talk to this jogger to find out if they had seen anything which might help our inquiries."

He added: "The investigation is continuing and we are still appealing for witnesses to come forward."

An e-fit of the suspect was released yesterday. He is a tanned, white man in his mid 30s, about 6ft tall, and of medium build.

He had brown eyes, short brown hair with a flick, black stubble, and a London or Essex accent.

Anyone with information should contact the major crimes investigation unit at Stanway, Colchester, on 01206 762212 Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or call into any police station.
