Bosses at Runwell Hospital have re-launched an inquiry into the death of a man restrained by staff, it has been revealed.

Michael Goldwater, 35, died following an incident at the hospital in the Chase, Wickford.

A clinical review by South Essex Mental Health and Community Care NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, has been on hold while police carried out their own inquiries.

However, Essex Police, working with the Crown Prosecution Service, announced earlier this week they had found no evidence of criminal conduct.

Post mortem results revealed Mr Goldwater, from Southend, died at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow following an incident during which he was "restrained".

Three members of nursing staff from the hospital remain suspended.

The Trust's internal review is likely to involve independent nursing and medical experts.

Staff at the mental health hospital, which is due to close next year after 63 years, were interviewed by Essex Police during the investigation.

The patient's family, from Hainault Avenue, Westcliff, were unavailable for comment. A spokesman for the NHS Trust said: "The trust's investigation into the tragic event was put on hold in April, at the request of Essex Police, while officers carried out their own inquiries.

"The trust hopes to complete its investigation as quickly as possible, for the sake of everyone concerned, particularly the bereaved family of the patient and the Trust staff involved.

"We are in close contact with the patient's family and are keeping them up to date on the progress of the investigation."

The trust has not given a date for the release of its findings.
