Copies of charters dating back to 1171 have been restored to their rightful place - Maldon's historic Moot Hall.
The 16 charters were granted to the town by various kings and queens dating back to Henry II.
Maldon District Museum has looked after them since the 1970s and they were on display in Mill Road.
Dr Paddy Lacey, chairman of the museum, said it was felt right they should go back to the Moot Hall.
"Photographs dating back to the Victorian time show them on display in the Moot Hall and they have been replaced in almost the identical places," he said.
Mayor Peter Roberts and keeper of the Moot Hall Alex Boyle officially received the charters and the borough banner.
The presentation coincided with the first tours of the Moot Hall which will take place every Saturday until October.
