Reports that a 52-year-old man from Basildon was killed in a hang-glider accident in France remain unconfirmed by the Foreign Office.
According to international news agencies the man died after crashing his hang-glider in the village of Passy near Chamonix in the French Alps on Friday.
However a Foreign Office spokesman said on Monday: "A British man was killed in a hang-glider accident in France but we cannot confirm where he was from or his identity until next of kin have been informed.
"We offered our assistance to the people he was flying with but they have not sought our help currently."
According to reports, the man was attempting a landing manoeuvre when the accident happened.
He was thought to have lost control of it and was attended to immediately at the crash site by emergency services.
However the man died some time after of his injuries.
