Security staff at Stansted Airport failed to detect a gun and a fake bomb planted in a test by Government officials, a national newspaper has claimed.
The Sun reported today that security guards at Stansted were duped by Department of Transport inspectors, one of whom managed to walk through a metal detector ready to board a plane with a handgun tucked into the waistband of his trousers.
Another put a fake bomb in a carrier bag which went through an X-ray machine without being spotted, it was alleged.
The tests were carried out as part of a regular programme by Department of Transport inspectors.
Stansted Airport has confirmed that security is being re-assessed but declined to comment on specific tests.
