An increasing number of road traffic accidents on the B1007 between Galleywood and Stock is concerning those living and working beside Stock Road.

Resident Janet Elnaugh has been campaigning since the summer for the 60mph speed limit to be reduced, traffic calming and roundabouts, believing they will help lower the accident rate.

Mrs Elnaugh, of Beeches Cottage, said: "I have 'witnessed' at least 25 accidents outside my own front door since we moved here three years ago and to my knowledge there have been four deaths in the last two years.

"I feel sure that the current speed limit contributes to many of these accidents and recently my worst nightmare happened when a car left the road, mounted my drive and hit the front wall of my house.

"Luckily my car was not on the drive with me or my small son inside, and that it was not a lorry."

Her concern is shared by workers at the nearby Temple Wood and Temple industrial estates who say they take their lives into their hands turning into Stock Road.

Jack Whitbread, site foreman for IS & G Steel Stockholders, said road accidents outside the estates two entrances were a regular occurrence.

As part of Accident Reduction 2010, a Government initiative to reduce road accidents, a route survey was recently commissioned by Mouchel Counsulting Ltd in conjunction with Essex County and Chelmsford Borough Councils.as well as the Casualty Reduction Unit attached to Essex Police.
