Southend United's Supporters Club Trust has hailed David Webb's return as manager of the Blues as "the return of the Messiah".

Fans' spokesman Paul FitzGerald said: "The whole of Southend is excited by the news of Webb's return.

"He has a fabulous track record at Southend and all the fans are hoping he can wave his magic wand again. It is just like the return of the Messiah."

Paul also believed Webb's arrival would inspire a feeling of unity in the Roots Hall stands.

"Webb is universally approved by the supporters and would have been everybody's top choice as manager," he said.

"The fans will be patient and give him a chance to pull Blues' fortunes around. He will help bring everyone closer together - Webb will rejuvenate the whole club!"

However, Paul did voice one concern. "It's well documented that Webb got involved with the other side of things at his last League club Brentford," he added.

"He became chairman at Griffin Park and was frowned upon by the fans, but we need him as a manager only at Roots Hall.

"We need Webb focused on what's happening on the pitch and not getting involved in the administration side off the field."
