It's all systems go for a new coastguard station in Maldon.

But volunteers are needed to help operate it.

District councillors have approved the use of a workshop within the council's Princes Road depot as a coastguard station.

The coastguard Land Rover vehicle and mud rescue equipment will be stored there.

Dick Townshend MBE, coastguard sector manager, hopes the station will be operational this year.

"We are urgently looking for about six people who are willing to become auxiliary coastguards in the town," he said.

"They would form part of a team to respond to sea rescue emergencies in the Maldon, Dengie and South Woodham Ferrers area."

Mr Townshend stressed those volunteering must live or work within the immediate Maldon town area.

"It is essential for them to be close by," he said.

Volunteers should be 25 to 55, have good eyesight, hold a clean driving licence and be available at short notice.

About 11 people are needed to operate in Maldon and Mr Townshend explained no auxiliary coastguard would be expected to be 'on call' more than one day a week. This would help an employer know when a member of staff was likely to be called out.
