Hadleigh's former Renault car dealership site in London Road may soon be home to a supermarket, it has emerged.

Site owner Godfrey Davis has sold the land as development for a retail store after its decision to sell the Renault franchise to the Lookers dealership on September 1.

Lookers has now decided to move its newly-acquired Renault section to Priory Crescent in Southend which has been operating as a Rover dealership until now.

Andrew Hall, Renault franchise director for Lookers, admitted he knew little about the fate of the London Road site.

He said: "The former location has been sold by its owners Godfrey Davis as a development for a possible retail outlet, maybe a supermarket. The old premises were never in our plans."

The group is currently restructuring its dealerships throughout south Essex.
