A 35-year-old man is in a critical condition after his car smashed into trees on the A12 at Witham in the early hours of Saturday.
The motorist, from Braintree, is being treated for serious head injuries at Chelmsford's Broomfield Hospital after the crash, which happened shortly after midnight.
His condition was today (Monday) said to be improving but he remains in a critical condition.
His female passenger, 31, escaped with minor injuries and has been released from hospital. The car was leaving the A12 at the Hatfield Road turn-off when it left the road and hit trees.
