Chalvedon Boxing Club's John Denard has won through to the latter stages of the National Association of Boys Clubs championships.

The 15-year-old from Wickford had two fights at under-67 kilos level, beating Finchley's M Smythe and Ryan McDonald of Bushey on unanimous points verdicts.

However, it was the end of the road for Chalvedon's Wayne Hibbitt, 15, who was narrowly beaten on points by Herefordshire opponent Frankie Smith in the under-60 kilos category.

Lloyd Reddey opened Basildon's account with a strong performance and Chris O'Conner followed with a tough drawn fight with Alex Bateman.

Gary Brennan gave an awesome display to earn a a stoppage over Ross Hill while Simon Panther was unlucky to only get a draw over his opposite number.

It was then a spell of one-way traffic as Basildon duo Neil Burns and Scott Cameron both won their respective fights with ease.

The hosts' clean sweep was spoiled by Southend's Kevin Knight who won a very closely fought contest with Mick Arthur.

Other camps also had some tremendous encounters with Aveley's Stephanie Wolfe losing out on points to Southend girl Jo Mitchell. This was followed by a frantic four rounder which failed to produce a winner between London's Stacy Bowhill and Basildon's Toni Clark.

The most ferocious fight of the night came when host club's Tom Allen locked horns with Kit 'The Dragon' Muegen from Norwich.

Despite taking some punishing shots and having six stitches after the fight, Allen floored Muegen three times to take a well deserved win.

Experienced Basildon fighter Dave Jenkins continued his winning streak with a superb victory over Martin Lamb from Norfolk.

Jamie Egan was another to do his Basildon club proud - earning the fighter of the night accolade after winning his encounter in textbook style.

Event organisers Rob Judd and Chris Day were delighted with the night's entertainment, giving special mention to the fantastic home support.

"These evenings take a lot of hard work and we would like to thank all the people who helped make the night such a success", said Judd.

He added: "We would like to thank our sponsors Argos Distribution, Bridge Panelcraft, KB Coaches, IGS, Victor Trophies, JK Shah and Pitsea Ironing Services for their support and also give a special mention to Andy Brown for his hard work a very busy corner man!"

Basildon prospect Ricky Judd could not fight competitively on the night as he is in action in two week's time.

Instead, the popular youngster entertained the crowd with an exhibition match against three-times world professional champion Mark Weller.

However, it will be back to business for the highly-rated 17-year-old on November 12 when he fights in a seven-round encounter with 'Son of Scotland' Sandy Easden at Bethnal Green's York Hall.

As usual, the Basildon club are laying on coach and ticket packages for the big night, which also sees new towner Shane Burns up against international opposition.
