Canvey Island will be aiming to go six points clear of their nearest rivals at the top of the Ryman Premier when Enfield visit Park Lane tonight (Tuesday, 7.45pm).

It's Gulls' first League match in over two weeks and they could hardly have greater incentive to put all thoughts of their FA Cup glories out of their minds.

Few will need reminding that the Islanders, on Sunday week, meet Football League opposition competitively for only the second time in their history when Second Division Port Vale come to Park Lane in soccer's greatest knockout competition.

Said manager Jeff King: "Obviously the build-up to, and organisation, of the Port Vale game is putting tremendous pressure on a lot of backroom staff at the club but, for tomorrow night and Saturday's game with Hendon, the League must be the only thing in our thoughts.

"As for myself and coach Glenn Pennyfather we won't find it hard to focus on the League games and it must be the same for the players.

"They are professional enough to know that, if any of them start to have Cup dreams and let our League form slip, they won't even be in the team for the Port Vale match.

"We're lucky enough to have a large squad here and everyone who is not in the starting line-up at the moment is champing at the bit to get in the team.

"Our number one ambition this season is to win the Premier Division - let's face it, we're not going to win the FA Cup. What the Cup does of course is to not only bring extra revenue to allow us to carry out improvements for the future but also put us into a far wider spotlight.

"We'll be watched, and read about, by people who've never heard of Canvey let alone the football club before and, as with the Brighton game five years ago, we like to think we're playing a part in putting the place further on the map."

Gulls' fabulous form last month - they won three FA Cup ties and two League games - won King the October manager of the month Premier Division prize.

If his side do win the Premier title and enjoy an even greater Cup run by knocking out Port Vale they may well end up giving him the Freedom of Canvey.

All that, of course, is a long way away and tonight King will happily settle for three points against an Enfield side who don't win too many matches - but don't lose many either.

They've drawn six times in 12 League games, winning and losing three. They currently stand 15th in the table with 15 points from 12 games - 14 short of Canvey's total. They have a goal difference of 20-18 against the 22-7 of their hosts.

One man who could cause the Islanders problems is Bryan Hammatt, who had a short spell with Billericay Town last season. He scored twice in Saturday's 4-2 FA Umbro Trophy win over Erith and Belvedere.
