A pensioner was found dead with gunshot wounds in the grounds of her home.
Elizabeth Stanford, 66, was discovered in the garden of the house in The Street, Tendring, while her husband Julian was away in London.
PC Nick Waltham, coroner's officer at Clacton, said that the Essex coroner had been informed of the death and an inquest was opened and adjourned.
A full hearing will be held at Weeley on January 17.
PC Waltham said: "Police are satisfied there were no suspicious circumstances."
