A school could be set for a major £100,000 facelift - if the sale of a caretaker's house adjoining the site goes ahead.

Northwick Park Junior and Infant schools in Third Avenue, Canvey, have decided to cash in on the property after its caretaker turned down the chance to live there.

The caretaker's cottage has been empty for nearly three years, so the school's governors have put the property on the market with the hope that the profits can be spent the schools.

Derek Aldridge, chairman of Northwick Park School governors, said: "The infant school will hopefully undergo major remodelling to improve the overall layout. This would cost in excess of £100,000.

"The improvements planned for the junior school are not as clear, but we have ideas on would what we would like to do."

Council planners will meet this week to decide if permission for a boundary fence to separate the cottage from the actual school grounds can be granted.
