Club skipper Simon Clark, who was involved in a fatal car accident nine days ago, has indicated he intends to return to Layer Road for training next Monday.
Colchester United chief executive Marie Partner said: "Simon has made contact and is very conscious of maintaining his match fitness.
"He is still very shaken up but he wishes to make contact with the bereaved man's family whose funeral takes place on Friday."
Goalkeeper Simon Brown has had another x-ray on the injured foot that kept him out of Saturday's game with Wycombe.
