A pensioner has been left shocked and angry after vandals smashed down a concrete garden fence to trample through his garden.

Alan Grainger, 72, of Walton Road, Walton, said for months youngsters have been using the garden of his block of flats as a cut through to the main road.

Instead of going 300 yards around the garden, they climb over the fence.

In the past he said the residents had wooden panel fences broken down by the youths and they thought that putting up a concrete one would stop the problem.

But now the vandals have smashed down the heavy six foot high, 12 foot long fence too.

He said: "The fence looks as if someone has driven a tank through it."

Mr Grainger added: "Some of it was done late at night so they would not be going into town. They just get pleasure out of doing it."

He said the residents of the flats were mostly pensioners who would have to pay for the damage themselves.

He said: "I do not know why they get so much out of ruining other people's property. It is not as if we are a rich lot - nearly all of us are pensioners."

A spokesman for Walton police said they were aware of the problem and would be trying to find the people responsible.

He said: "It was an act of wanton vandalism even though it seems that they were doing it to make a short cut."
