The mayor of Witham has stepped down from his post while an investigation into an alleged breach of local government rules is carried out.

A press release issued by Witham Town Council on Friday reported a formal investigation would be undertaken with regards to infringements of the Local Government Act by a member, concerning the declarations of interests.

It also confirmed the mayor, Michael Jones, had agreed not to undertake any duties as a councillor or as mayor during the period of investigation.

The statement said: "The mayor's voluntary action in passing all duties to the deputy is welcomed. Such co-operation will help speed the investigation and enable the council to get back to business as usual as soon as possible."

Mr Jones, of Blunts Hall Drive, moved to the town about 15 years ago with his wife Edelweis James, a nurse, and their son Stephen, after his career in the computer industry led him to a job with insurance company Sedgwick, now Marsh.

He now runs his own computer consultancy company in London. He accepted the chain of office in May this year and remains secretary to the Witham branch of the Labour Party.

Mr Jones was unavailable for comment this morning but issued a statement along with the council's on Friday.

He said: "I wish to be as helpful as possible in resolving this matter."
