Arena Essex received some disappointing news this week when it was revealed that Leigh Lanham will not have his average reduced following a season on the sidelines.

The Hammers number one, who is still to be confirmed as a definite starter for next year, broke his thigh during Arena's opening meeting against Isle of Wight and the club had applied for his average to be reduced.

Hammers co-promoter Peter Thorogood said: "The BSPA normally drop a riders average by eight per cent when they have spent a season out of the sport but in Leigh's case, they are insisting that his figure will remain at 8.82, the figure he started the 2000 season with.

"It does seem odd that they have not allowed a reduction but he still remains our number one target."
