An investigation is being launched after a person was believed to have fired an airgun at the front window of a passing train.

The suspected shooting happened at the Motts Lane footbridge in Witham shortly before 2pm on Saturday.

The driver of the Ipswich-bound train said he thought someone had fired a pellet from the footbridge causing the windscreen of the train to smash.

PC Steve Harris, of British Transport Police, said yesterday (Monday) a full investigation would be carried out, but it would be hard to trace the culprits without an accurate description.

He said: "The potential is horrendous - frightening. It does not bear thinking about. It is potentially very, very dangerous."
