A police officer serving in Harwich is being put forward to represent Essex Police in this year's Community Police Officer of the Year award.

The award looks for the best bobbies and most community-minded coppers in the land.

This year Essex will be represented by PC Tony Welham, who has been with the force for 28 years and has worked in Harwich for the past five.

Sgt Peter Wood, of Harwich police, said: "It really is quite a prestigious award where the best officers are hopefully recognised for their achievements."

Since moving to Harwich station, PC Welham has been involved with the town's Rhyme Against Crime initiative in primary schools.

The programme encourages school children to think about the consequences of vandalism and theft by writing poetry about it.

Organiser of the event and town councillor, Garry Calver said: "It comes as no surprise that Tony is to be Essex Police's representative as he has a marvellous personality coupled with tremendous dedication and commitment to his work in the community."
