Police are urging residents in Coggeshall to join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, in a bid to reduce crime in the community.

Witham Police are trying to increase the number of neighbourhood watchers in the village, where currently only two people are members.

There has been a spate of vandalism in the village recently, and police believe a Neighbourhood Watch scheme could help reduce these types of incidents.

PC Emma Makey said: "For the Neighbourhood Watch scheme to run, we need a co-ordinator. Their role is to distribute information to local residents who wish to be part of Neighbourhood Watch and collect information as well. They can also pass on information they get from residents to the police."

The aims of Neighbourhood Watch include trying to reduce opportunities for crime by deterring would be thieves and vandals, establishing a community spirit so everyone can contribute in protecting their property, and informing the police of any suspicious activity.

PC Makey added: "We would like people in the whole of the Witham District to become involved in Neighbourhood Watch."

Neighbourhood Watch forms are available from Witham Police Station or for more information, contact PC Makey or Tricia Staerk on 01376 501212.
