A dramatic video showing the police pursuit of alleged Triad gang members from the scene of a killing has been shown to a jury.

Vehicles from both Essex Police and the Metropolitan Police, including armed response units, tailed a "convoy" of three high performance cars along the A12 from outside Colchester into east London, Kingston Crown Court heard.

Police believed the occupants of the three cars were involved in the death of Hok Wan Leung, a former member of the notorious 14K Triad gang, the jury was told.

Mr Leung, 34, was left for dead at the Middleborough roundabout, Colchester, on July 25. He died later in hospital that day.

Earlier the jury heard how he was hacked by machetes, beaten with baseball bats and run over.

And on Tuesday, they were shown a video tape filmed by police officers as they tailed the three suspect cars to London.

The court heard the convoy never exceeded 60mph, although the occupants of the cars were "constantly looking behind them".

PC Elaine Miller, who was following one of the cars, a Honda Civic, said they believed the suspects may have weapons.

She said they tailed the car through Poplar, east London, before being overtaken by an armed response unit carrying officers from the Met's SO19 firearms force.

This unit pulled in front of the vehicle and the five occupants were arrested without a struggle, she said.

A second suspect car, a silver Mecedes, was finally boxed in by police in London Road, Romford, after peeling away from the others the court heard.

PC Ian Jefferies, of Essex Police, said: "There were three men in the vehicle. They were of Chinese appearance."

He said the Mercedes was damaged at the front and he found a fragment of glass on the nearside rear seat.

Sgt Paul Donnelly, ran over to the Mercedes when the police stopped it.

"I shouted at the man inside to step out of the vehicle and put his hands on his head and we arrested him on the spot."

The man arrested was Chan Tai Man.

Earlier the court heard how Mr Leung and his three friends were chased in their cars by several vehicles along the A12 as they made their way to an illegal gambling den in Colchester.

Seven men deny conspiracy to murder, and an alternate charge of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm and violent disorder.
