A promising young Billericay historian has impressed a host of celebrity judges with her outstanding entry in a UK/US essay writing competition.

An essay by Alexandra Hill, 15, a student at St Martin's School in Hutton, Brentwood, was picked out by a judging panel including Steven Spielberg, Ralph Fiennes, Tom Hanks, Sir David Frost and former US presidential candidate Bob Dole.

Her essay explored the relationship between the USA and the UK during World War II and the judges were said to be especially impressed with the clarity and conciseness of the essay, and Alexandra's use of very good examples.

At a special reception at the US ambassador's residence in London last week, the ambassador Philip Lader and education secretary David Blunkett presented awards to Alexandra and other finalists. As well as receiving a certificate from Mr Blunkett, she won two computers - one for herself and another for her history teacher who nominated her for the award.

Mr Lader said: "The competition has generated great interest in schools from all parts of the United Kingdom. It aimed to provide a stimulus for young people to explore further the profound effects of World War II on individuals and the world at large."

Alexandra, of Connaught Way, Billericay, said: "I feel that history is about being able to look at the events and historical figures with the benefit of hindsight and understanding how they have an effect on the present day."

Talented: Alexandra Hill
