A vasectomy is up for grabs at a charity auction in Colchester - and it might go for a snip of the normal price.

An auction of promises raising money for Colchester Citizens' Advice Bureau will be held at the town hall.

Last year's auction raised about £2,000 and it is hoped this year's event will do just as well - if not better.

Money raised will help equip the bureau with new computers and a revamped telephone system.

Auctioneers Bob Edwards and Hugh Bostock hope to inject a bit of humour into the night's proceedings.

Wivenhoe councillor Mr Richards said: "It's a very worthwhile charity which carries out a lot of good work. It promises to be a fun night out, and many of the promises being auctioned are very interesting."

Among the 51 items pledged so far is a signed photograph from the Prime Minister's wife, Cherie Booth, a brace of pheasants, help with tax returns and a chance to try out Essex Police's skid pan.

There are also many others including a television set, various tours and even a meal for four cooked by John Gray, whose councillor wife, Sandra Gray, will wait on the table before washing up.

However, possibly the most unusual promise on offer is a vasectomy.

Mr Richardson said: "I have never auctioned a vasectomy before, and I won't be buying it on the evening."

The auction is being held at the mayoral suite at the town hall on December 5 from 7.30pm.

Catalogues will go on display in the town hall, the bureau offices in High Street, Colchester, and in the central library.
