Sunday brought the start of the 2000/2001 Cross Country season for member clubs of the South Essex "Running Fitness" League.

On a testing three and a half mile course in South Weald Country Park, made wet and muddy by the recent rain, Billericay Striders were winners by a margin of 50 points over their nearest rivals East Essex Tri-athletes.

Ford Fitness won the division two race.

Gary Malley from Havering 90 was the first man home in 20 minutes 20 seconds and Wendy Read from Billericay Striders, the first woman, completed the course in 24 minutes and 33 seconds.

All runners and friends enjoyed refreshments after the race and following the announcement of the results an opportunity was taken to mark a fine performance in the Essex County Road Race Championships in the over 50 section.

Peter Chown, Race organiser, presented a trophy to Steve Fulker of Billericay Striders, who won this year's series of four races over 20 and 10 miles, half marathon and 10 kilometres.
