Essex Police have been called in to investigate a town mayor.

Witham Town Council has asked them to look at a possible breach of the Local Government Act, which regulates councillors' behaviour.

Last week the council said a formal investigation would begin into alleged infringements of rules concerning the declaration of councillors' interests.

In the statement the council confirmed Witham mayor Michael Jones had agreed not to undertake any duties as a councillor, or as mayor, during the period of investigation.

On Wednesday night a council spokesperson said: "After taking legal advice the matter concerning councillor Jones has been referred to the police.

"What is important at this stage is that we do not do anything to prejudice any investigation that may take place."

Mr Jones yesterday (Thursday) said he wished to comment no further than his previous statement that he wanted to be as helpful as possible in resolving the matter.
