Groups and organisations from across Uttlesford have met councillors to share their hopes for the future of the district.
Hosted by Uttlesford District Council, the community conference was attended by representatives from the voluntary sector, local businesses, community groups and the churches.
It is the first time these groups have all joined together in this way.
As well as members of the county, town and parish councils, the police and the health service were also involved.
The aim of the meeting was to receive feedback and commitment on the key priorities for Uttlesford over the next few years.
They include safeguarding the environment, improving the health of the community and better access to services and jobs.
The next step is to start planning a community strategy for the district, but John Pares said this would be a gradual process.
"We want to make sure we are working with the community and don't want to rush into anything," he said.
Robert Chambers, leader of the council, added: " I was delighted to see so many of our partners discussing community issues and their contribution will be invaluable.
