Two men claiming to be from the water board stole cash from an elderly man in St Edmund's Fields, Dunmow on Monday.
Some time during the evening the men called at the pensioner's home and told him they were water board officials.
He was asked to turn the taps on while one of the men stayed with him. Meanwhile the second man stole cash from his wallet.
